Text of the statement In the name of God, the most gracious, the most merciful Darfur Regional Government Ministry of Culture, Media and Communications The topic is a statement about World Press Freedom Day, in which he said that it is an opportunity to stand alongside the media to exercise freedom of the press
On the third of May of each year, the world celebrates World Press Freedom Day, a day designated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to commemorate the adoption of the historic Windhoek Declaration, which took place at a meeting of African journalists on the third of May 1991. The aim of this declaration was to remind governments of the need to respect freedom of the press. This declaration also stipulated a guarantee of a free and safe media environment for journalists. May 3 is also considered a day for journalists and media professionals to reflect on issues of press freedom and ethics.
This day passes while our country suffers from the scourge of war and the expansion of hate speech in light of regional, ethnic and partisan alignment, which has further torn the guise of the nation’s unity. Therefore, on this day, we would like to congratulate all the journalists in our country and share their great concern in adopting the issues of the press, journalists, and freedom of the press, and we support their aspirations to lay the foundations of a nation that respects the press as a free regulatory body.
We also whisper to journalists that freedom must be governed by professional ethics and self-censorship. Let us put the nation first before political, regional, and ethnic ideologies and colours. Let us differentiate, journalists and politicians, between opposition to governments and opposition to the nation. In conclusion, congratulations to a group of journalists on their day and full solidarity with their causes Abdul Aziz Suleiman Uri Ministry of Culture, Media and Communications
